Mock API vs Mock Server: What’s the Difference?
A mock API is the simulated interface and behavior a client calls; a mock server is the process that receives those requests and returns the simulated responses. Teams often use the terms interchangeably, but the distinction helps when choosing between static fixtures and a stateful runtime.

Define mock API and mock server directly
The mock API is the contract-facing simulation: paths, methods, response bodies, statuses, auth, queries, and timing. The mock server is the software process hosting that behavior at an address such as http://localhost:4000.
Compare the concepts
One server can host many mock API resources, and one API definition can theoretically run in different server environments. In Mock API Studio, the CLI is the local mock server and the synchronized project defines the mock API.
| Question | Mock API | Mock server |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | Simulated contract and behavior | Process that handles requests |
| Typical example | GET /orders response | Express on localhost:4000 |
| Primary concern | Accuracy of responses | Execution, state, and availability |
Use a static mock for narrow needs
A hardcoded object, fixture file, or request interceptor is enough for a component that needs one deterministic response. It is quick, easy to commit, and has little operational overhead.
Use a stateful local server for interactions
A running server is useful when the app creates and edits records, follows nested routes, sends auth headers, pages through collections, or needs latency and service failures.
POST /orders
PATCH /orders/order-17
GET /customers/customer-4/orders
GET /orders?page=2&sort=total&direction=descUnderstand persistence and simulation
Mock API Studio stores compatible local state in SQLite and exposes runtime controls. This makes multi-request flows repeatable without claiming to reproduce a production database, infrastructure, or authorization model.
Choose based on the frontend state
Prefer the smallest tool that represents the behavior under test. Move from fixtures to a stateful server when interactions, team-shared configuration, or runtime controls justify it.

Are mock API and mock server synonyms?
In casual use, often yes. More precisely, the API is the simulated interface and the server is the process that serves it.
