Connect Angular to a realistic local mock API

Angular can call Mock API Studio through its standard HttpClient. Put the local server address in environment configuration, request typed responses from a service, and use ordinary RxJS error handling. The mock server stays framework-independent and can later be replaced by the production base URL.

Provide HttpClient and configure the environment

Modern standalone Angular applications register HttpClient with provideHttpClient. Store the base URL in the relevant environment file so development and production builds select different servers.

TypeScript
// app.config.ts
export const appConfig: ApplicationConfig = {
  providers: [provideHttpClient()]
};

// environments/environment.development.ts
export const environment = {
  apiUrl: "http://localhost:4000"
};

Request a typed, paginated response

The default paginated collection contains data and meta. Configure parameter names in the project if your real contract uses different names.

Angular service
export interface Product { id: string; name: string; price: number; }
export interface ProductPage {
  data: Product[];
  meta: { page: number; limit: number; totalPages: number };
}

@Injectable({ providedIn: "root" })
export class ProductsService {
  private http = inject(HttpClient);

  list(page = 1) {
    const params = new HttpParams().set("page", page).set("limit", 20);
    return this.http.get<ProductPage>(`${environment.apiUrl}/products`, { params }).pipe(
      catchError(error => {
        console.error("Products request failed", error.status);
        return throwError(() => error);
      })
    );
  }
}

Exercise error and authentication paths

Use Angular interceptors for the same credentials intended for production, then configure the mock project to require them. Fixed latency and injected 503 responses help verify loading signals, retry behavior, and error messages.

Switch environments

Keep request paths, query parameters, and response types aligned with the agreed backend contract. When production is ready, update environment.apiUrl and run the same Angular screens against the real service.

Related questions

Does Mock API Studio require an Angular package?

No. Angular HttpClient calls the local runtime as a normal REST service.

Can it return paginated Angular data?

Yes. Collection routes can return data with pagination metadata and configurable page and limit parameter names.
